Why UV protection matters
Why UV protection is so important and how our premium parasols keep you safe
The sun feels great, but its rays aren’t always harmless. UV radiation (ultraviolet) consists of UVA and UVB rays, both types can harm your skin. UVA penetrates deeply and contributes to skin ageing, pigmentation spots and wrinkles. UVB is mainly responsible for sunburn and, in the long run, can increase the risk of skin cancer. These rays reach you not only on sunny days but also when it’s cloudy. UVA even passes through glass. That’s why UV protection in your garden or on your terrace isn’t a luxury, but an essential part of safe outdoor living.
SPF & UPF explained
When it comes to sun protection, you’ll often come across two terms: SPF and UPF. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) refers to sun creams and indicates how long your skin is protected from UVB rays, which mainly cause sunburn.
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) applies to fabrics such as parasol canopies, clothing and shade sails, showing how much UV light penetrates the material. The higher the UPF rating, the better the protection – and the safer your shade.
A UPF of 50 means only about 2% of UV rays pass through the fabric. That’s considered excellent protection and ideal for a parasol in your garden, on your terrace or by the pool. By choosing a parasol with a high UPF value, you add not just comfort to your outdoor space, but also an important extra layer of protection for your skin.
Your shade, your protection with Platinum Parasols
Not every parasol offers the same level of UV protection. Many standard options provide shade yet still allow a significant amount of UV radiation through. The Platinum Sun & Shade collection has been specially developed to combine effective protection with timeless design and premium comfort.
Our premium Spuncrylic fabrics offer up to 98% UV protection (UPF 50). The highest textile protection category. This makes them ideal for families with children, people with sensitive skin and anyone who wants to enjoy longer hours outdoors in safety. Our polyester fabrics offer up to 96% UV protection (UPF 35), still providing excellent protection for everyday use in the garden or on the terrace.
Extra benefits of our premium parasol fabric classes
Colourfast: In addition to protecting against harmful UV rays, our parasol fabrics bring practical advantages to your outdoor living. Thanks to solution-dyed fibres, the fabrics are colourfast – retaining their beauty even under intense sunlight and frequent use. They are also water- and dirt-repellent, making them easy to maintain and clean.
Durable: Want to extend the life of your parasol? A protective cover is essential. With an AeroCover protective cover, the fabric stays better protected from rain, dirt and weather influences when not in use. This keeps your parasol in top condition for longer, so you’re always ready for the next sunny day.
